Finance leaders often ask the same question. How do I lead when I do not actually have authority? But in reality influence often has very little to do with your job title and everything to do with becoming trusted in the organisation.
Build credibility
Know your numbers. Understand how the business works. Explain things in plain English, especially when talking to people outside of the finance team. When people trust that you understand the detail, they will listen even if you are not the final decision-maker.
Understand stakeholders
Spend time getting to know what others care about. When you show how finance helps them hit their goals, they see you as a partner, not just the numbers person.
Be visible and proactive
Do not wait to be invited. Join meetings, offer ideas, ask great questions, find a senior sponsor. Influence is built through consistent contribution.
You do not need authority to make a difference. You need credibility, empathy and the courage to show up.
