Having worked on executive hiring for a long time, I have seen plenty of mistakes that could have been avoided. Most of them come from moving too quickly or focusing on the wrong things, rather than stepping back to look at what the business really needs.
Mistake 1: Rushing the process
Because executive roles are high pressure, businesses often rush to fill the gap. That can often lead to a poor fit around values, leadership style or long-term vision.
Mistake 2: Overvaluing pedigree
Impressive sounding job titles and big brand names do not always predict success. Some of the best leaders are not the obvious choices on paper.
Mistake 3: Poor stakeholder alignment
When HR, the Board and the leadership team are not aligned, candidates feel it. The best people drop out, while weaker candidate can make it through.
Executive recruitment is not something to rush. Investing time upfront gives you a much better chance of finding someone who genuinely supports the business and its people.
