Q4 Market Insight: Confidence Improves as Businesses Focus on the Right Finance Hires

As we head into the final quarter of 2026, there are encouraging signs across the Yorkshire finance recruitment market, although businesses remain cautious about hiring decisions.

Following a measured first half of the year, confidence is beginning to improve, particularly at senior finance level. Across the market, employers continue to focus on finding people who can add value, improve efficiency and support business performance.

Here’s what we’re seeing across our specialist finance recruitment teams as we move into Q4.

Executive and Senior Finance: Confidence Returns

The senior finance recruitment market has seen a noticeable improvement in confidence, with activity holding up well throughout the traditionally quieter summer period.

At Headstar, we’ve secured a record number of retained searches and completed assignments at senior level during Q3, suggesting businesses are becoming more willing to invest in their finance leadership teams.

The latest KPMG/REC Report on Jobs supports this more positive outlook, with permanent placements increasing for the second consecutive month in September. The permanent placements index reached 50.9 – its strongest reading for four years – with the North of England the strongest-performing region.

We’re also seeing a change in what businesses want from their senior finance hires. Rather than simply replacing someone who has left, employers are reassessing what they need from their next Finance Director or CFO.

There’s strong demand for finance leaders who can challenge the Board, influence decisions, improve performance and lead change, while remaining comfortable supporting their teams. Systems improvement, AI, automation and better use of data are also increasingly important.

Senior candidates are becoming more open to opportunities, although many remain selective about making a move. We expect activity to continue improving through October and November, with businesses that can offer a compelling opportunity best placed to attract the strongest talent.

Interim and Transformation: Demand for Proven Expertise

Economic uncertainty and ongoing geopolitical tensions continue to influence the interim senior finance market, with businesses cautious about spending and long-term commitments.

However, demand remains for experienced interim professionals who can provide immediate support with transformation, cost optimisation, financial control and business performance.

Hiring decisions are being scrutinised more closely, with employers placing greater emphasis on technical expertise, proven results and the ability to make an impact quickly.

Interim appointments continue to offer businesses flexibility during periods of change, helping them address critical skills gaps and maintain momentum without committing to permanent headcount.

Looking ahead, market conditions are likely to remain unpredictable, but experienced interim finance leaders who can deliver tangible results will continue to play an important role.

Transactional Finance: Steady Demand and Changing Expectations

The Yorkshire transactional finance market remained resilient throughout Q3, although recruitment activity continues to be measured.

Replacement hiring remains a significant driver of demand across purchase ledger, sales ledger, credit control, payroll and accounts support. Businesses are taking longer to make recruitment decisions, with additional interview stages and budget approvals extending hiring processes.

Cash flow management remains a priority, with experienced Credit Controllers and accounts receivable professionals particularly valuable to businesses looking to reduce aged debt and strengthen financial controls.

Technology is also changing expectations. Employers increasingly value strong Excel and ERP skills, alongside candidates who can demonstrate experience of improving processes, implementing systems or embracing automation and AI.

Candidate confidence has gradually improved, although finance professionals remain selective. Salary is important, but flexible working, progression opportunities and supportive management continue to influence decisions.

We expect transactional finance recruitment to remain steady through Q4, with employers focused on making effective hires rather than significantly expanding headcount.

Looking Ahead: Cautious Optimism for Q4

The overall outlook for Yorkshire’s finance recruitment market is cautiously positive as we approach the end of 2026.

Senior finance recruitment is showing encouraging signs of recovery, interim professionals remain valuable where businesses need specialist expertise, and transactional finance hiring continues at a steady pace.

Across all three areas, employers are increasingly focused on the value a new hire can bring, with commercial awareness, adaptability and technology skills becoming more important.

For businesses planning to recruit, having a clear understanding of what they need and keeping recruitment processes moving will be key to securing the right people.
