James Roach joins Connect Yorkshire live panel exploring what drives profitable growth

Headstar’s Managing Director, James Roach, recently took part in his first live panel discussion as an Entrepreneur in Residence with Connect Yorkshire.

The session, held at Ultimate Interiors’ showroom near Skipton, brought together experienced business leaders to explore a topic that’s front of mind for many founders – driving profitability.

The panel was chaired by Ian Hargreaves (Managing Director of Your Engine Room), who led the discussion featuring James Roach alongside fellow Entrepreneurs in Residence; Rachel Hannan (Director of The Hannan Partnership Ltd), and Michael Bridge (a Strategic Planning Consultant).

A focus on what actually drives profit

The conversation focused on the practical realities of building and sustaining profitability in today’s market. Much of the discussion centred on the importance of cost discipline, with panellists sharing how reducing operational waste and tightening processes can have a direct impact on performance.

There was also a strong emphasis on building effective sales functions and teams, alongside creating better visibility over revenue and cost. This included the use of data and dashboards to support clearer decision-making and give leaders a more accurate picture of what is really driving performance.

The panel also highlighted the importance of listening – both to customers and employees – as a way of identifying issues early and improving how businesses operate day to day.

As Caroline Broad, Board Member at Connect Yorkshire, shared following the session: “Profit doesn’t happen by accident… those getting it right focus on reducing waste, tightening processes, listening to staff and customers, being close to the numbers and being confident in their pricing.”

Challenging assumptions around growth

A recurring theme was challenging the idea that more sales automatically leads to better outcomes.

Questions raised during the session included:

  • Are more sales always the answer?
  • What does profitable growth actually look like?
  • What is really driving your numbers?

The panel explored how profitability is often the result of a well-run business, rather than a standalone objective.

Practical insight for Yorkshire business leaders

The session reflected what Connect Yorkshire is known for – bringing together experienced operators to share real-world insight.

Attendees left with practical ideas around improving cost control, strengthening commercial visibility, and building teams that contribute to long-term value.

Strengthening Headstar’s role in the Yorkshire business community

James’ involvement as Entrepreneur in Residence builds on Headstar’s position within the Yorkshire business community, supporting founders and finance leaders beyond recruitment.
